more matchbooks

matches

My brother Jim unearthed these beautiful matchbooks while moving a dresser in a place that he volunteers at. I was amazed that he sent them to me without knowing that I’d previously posted on this. I love the blunt simplicity and utility of”Municipal Liquor Store.”

Authenticity

The talented Mr. Hughes tackles big themes every Friday and Saturday at Lowtide at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater. Brendan is a raconteur, wild mind, wicked funny and a good kid. (The highest praise in Dorchester, MA)

Bill Lee’s Back!

ap_argue

Just heard Bill Lee signed to the Brockton Rox at 63 years young! When he pitched for the Red Sox he was the hero of my house. How my parents relished his renegade and kooky ways. Poor Don Zimmer (the Gerbil) was right there with Nixon as far as my family was concerned. He was “the man”, the squasher of free spirits, the bore. Worst of all he we thought him an “explainer”, you know the type, an expert in his own mind. My mom wrote an essay called “Bill Lee a Love Song” and sent it to him. Months later she and my dad saw Lee at the Eliot Lounge and she asked him if he had received it. He said, “Are you kidding! I put it in my scrapbook!” With those words he was cemented forever in the hearts of the Hughes’.

Report from the Gulf

scharfenberg

My super talented and big hearted brother, David Scharfenberg, the news editor at the Providence Phoenix, went to New Orleans to report on the BP Spills effect on the food chain; from the oyster man to the chef and all the people in between. Read his story.

Rejection

al_feldstein

We that work in creative fields have the moons of rejection, criticism, failure always orbiting our heads. It is a firm belief here at HHD that all can be done with love and humor. Who doesn’t want success, perfection and praise. But without a steady stream of humility and perspective a person could get lost, deluded even.  So here is to those big pieces of humble pie life serves up. Enjoy! (Also we were huge, huge fans of Mad Magazine.)

Haenyo (sea woman)

haenyo

haenyo_2

My brother JoJo is working this summer on Jeju Island, South Korea. I read that the island has been historically matriarchal. In large part because of the Haenyo who have been the primary breadwinners. Apparently the men were too skinny and the women better adapted to stay in the water. They are able to dive 20 meters deep and hold their breath for over 2 minutes. Often it was the men who stayed home and raised the family. How cool is that!
