howardzinn

“But above all, [Howard Zinn] had a genius for the practical meaning of love. That is what drew legions of the young to him and what made the wide circle of his friends so constantly amazed and grateful.” James Carroll.

Here is to a life well lived, fights hard fought, boundless courage and unshakable hope.

Check out this great video by designer/illustrator Christian Borstlap. Simple, sweet and a little melancholy.

This is the best kind of public art. It creates a common experience for a wide swatch of humanity … and makes them laugh. Check out other work by Chris O’Shea.

maisel

We’re working this week (via the sister company, Hairpin Communications) on promoting this exhibit for the David Brower Center in Berkeley. Photographer David Maisel documents Owens Lake of Inyo County, CA. A once salty blue body, it has been devastated after being diverted to bring water to LA. Now a salt flat, it annually unleashes millions of metric tons of noxious dust. The photos are beautiful and haunting. The aerial shot pictured here looks to me like an open wound.

vote

Big vote today in Massachusetts. It is fair to say that the Democratic Machine got fat and sassy with Ted Kennedy’s seat. But the deeper and (almost as) disturbing phenomenon is the stranglehold on our public discourse. The impulse to be divisive and tweak our most primal fears. We distract each other from the real work that needs to be done. We need to be careful, people. We are too reckless with each other on this small planet we all share.

OK Go’s new video is directed by the very talented and hilarious Brian L. Perkins. It is one long, fantastic shot. I can’t imagine what it took to pull it off. Mr. Perkins is a writer, director and founding member of Killing My Lobster.
