All is right in the world again. At last there exists a Daniel Johnston themed iPhone game!

We just went through our archives. There were mechanicals and pasteboards that dated back 20 years. I felt such affection for all of the flotsam and tenderness towards our (much) younger selves. These were the days when we were grateful just for the chance to design. When skills were still catching up to talent. I could practically smell the enthusiasm and panic coming out of the boxes. We set aside some, the rest went to the curb.

PopTech ‘09

Hey look, we designed this year’s conference identity for the PopTech conference. This’ll be our fourth year attending and it is still hard to describe how mind-expanding the experience is. We always leave invigorated, challenged, connected and with our heads swirling. We are continually amazed how it informs our work and ever grateful to the staff at PopTech who are amazing, generous, fierce and so much fun to work with.

This year’s theme is America Reimagined and among the many speakers are Katy Payne, an authority on the language of elephants, Nicholas Feltron, designer and personal informatician, and food activist Michael Pollan.

There may still be some tickets – you really should go!

In Search of the Miraculous

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Bas Jan Ader was an artist, born in the Netherlands and later transplanted to Los Angeles and Las Vegas. He disappeared sometime in 1975 while attempting a near impossible trek across the Atlantic in a tiny sailboat. The voyage was art of a project called “In Search of the Miraculous.”

I am mesmerized by these films. This one is part of a series of his “fall” films.

Brendan is making a movie.

My brother Brendan is making a movie about our parents. Our Dad died when he was 6. Our parents were part of the Catholic Left and Anti-War movements in the 60s and 70s. They both grew up, Irish Catholic, outside of Boston. They were not hippies. If I had to call them anything it would be radical optimists. Our mom was a member of the East Coast Conspiracy to Save Lives. Here is a story; after raiding a draftboard she and her friends mailed the draft cards to the kids they belonged to. Each with a carefully handwritten note that said now they had the power to chose if they wanted to go to war or not. Our Dad was a priest at the Paulist Center in Boston where he started, among other things, the Walk for Hunger. Theirs is a sweet love story in the midst of cultural chaos. The photo is of Brendan after his interview with Howard Zinn. (Yes, I’m totally star struck!) Brendan has the talent, big heart and grit to pull this off. You can follow his progress here.

Creature Double Feature.

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

If you grew up in the Boston area in the 1970s Creature Double Feature on Channel 56 was the way to spend a Saturday afternoon. My brothers and I prayed for rain so our parents would let us stay in. Otherwise they put us out and said come back at lunch, same deal until dinner. Foul weather meant puffy cheese sandwiches, tomato soup and Godzilla or Mothra or Aliens.

June.

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Our friend June is a woman of many talents. She has a wicked and subversive sense of humor, is thoughtful and creative and comes from our favorite tribe, the fierce ones. We were lucky to work on a bunch of projects with her. On one she had to drive across 3 states in a bright white rental, which ran out of gas on I-95, to save us and the project from an impossible deadline. We made it. June rocks and we mean it! This is her band, Vagina Panther (you heard me.)
