Long before Zora Neal Hurston was a novelist she was an anthropologist. This was shot while she did field work in rural Florida. You can see her keen eye. There is footage of Cudjo Lewis the last survivor of the last slave ship to arrive in America, the Clotilde.

My brother Jim unearthed these beautiful matchbooks while moving a dresser in a place that he volunteers at. I was amazed that he sent them to me without knowing that I’d previously posted on this. I love the blunt simplicity and utility of”Municipal Liquor Store.”

These images are proof that if the internets existed when we were younger to feed and confirm our suspicions and obsessions we’d be way more weird (or at least less prone to careful readings of the Guiness Book of World Records or Ripley’s Believe it or Not!) We just picked up this book, America, by David Cushman Coyle, published in 1941. Beautiful design.



Ettore Guatelli grew up outside of Parma in Northern Italy. He was a teacher, writer and farmer. He died in 2000. He collected and filled his barn with old tools, shoes, toys…everyday things all arranged in intricate designs. He was drawn to the well-used, well-worn, discarded and ingenious. All used by hardworking hands. Now honored in all their humble glory.
