The talented Mr. Hughes tackles big themes every Friday and Saturday at Lowtide at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater. Brendan is a raconteur, wild mind, wicked funny and a good kid. (The highest praise in Dorchester, MA)

Visualizing the Stanley Cup

cup

This fantastic visualization was created by our good friend, collaborator, developer and go-to guy for all things requiring large brain activity, Robby Macdonell. Check out the Ottawa Senators once-in-a-lifetime activity vs. the New York Islanders concerted blast of Stanley Cup action. Discussion on how he did it here.

Looking forward to seeing this documentary on the musician/inventor Raymond Scott. When my first kid was born I went out and got “Soothing Sounds For Baby: Electronic Music By Raymond Scott, Vol. 1, 1 To 6 Months” hoping to turn my boy into a Kraftwerk robot or at least a Devo spud. The film, “DECONSTRUCTING DAD-The Music, Machines and Mystery of Raymond Scott,” was made by Scott’s son Stan Warnow.

This is the best kind of public art. It creates a common experience for a wide swatch of humanity … and makes them laugh. Check out other work by Chris O’Shea.

Live Now is a project created by Eric Smith after being diagnosed with cancer. Check out it out and go back when you’re needing some affirmation. Thanks to Aaron Bouvier for sending us the link.

Time to wonder.

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

We met Reuben Margolin at PopTech. His presence was so low-key, generous and humble that his incredible genius felt like a discovery. He looks at gestures that he sees in nature; a caterpillar, a ripple in the water, a spider web – and then sets out to understand and capture them in the most unlikely of mediums. Wood, wire, glass. His work has the slow reveal. You can appreciate the method, the mastery of the material. You then get to the deeper appreciation of the moment he’s caught. He made us pause and remember to wonder.

The kindness of strangers.

Kacie Kinzer was one of the amazing speakers at PopTech 2009 conference. She created a simple robot made of cardboard with a simple mission. To get from point A to point B in NYC relying on the help of strangers to get there. The footage is genuinely touching as all kind of people come to the tweenbots aid.
