Paul Mawhinney has the largest record collection in the world. It is worth millions of dollars but that can’t match Mr. Mawhinney’s passion. This bittersweet film by Sean Dunne captures his reckoning with his health and the death of vinyl. It just goes to show, you never know where your heart will go. What will touch you, make you feel connected to this world, inspire your devotion. I have always envied people who could hand themselves over completely. Even if it tilts a little toward obsession.

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010Zora Neal Hurston shot this!
Thursday, August 26th, 2010Long before Zora Neal Hurston was a novelist she was an anthropologist. This was shot while she did field work in rural Florida. You can see her keen eye. There is footage of Cudjo Lewis the last survivor of the last slave ship to arrive in America, the Clotilde.

One Got Fat (weirdest PSA, ever)
Monday, July 12th, 2010We were doing research and digging around the Prelinger Collection (fantastic!) and stumbled upon this video. Words can not do justice. We have watched it countless times here with our mouths agape. You have to watch it straight through to appreciate how totally twisted, creepy and awesome it is.
Care and Feeding of a Mermaid
Thursday, June 17th, 2010Raymond Scott Doc.
Tuesday, June 8th, 2010
Looking forward to seeing this documentary on the musician/inventor Raymond Scott. When my first kid was born I went out and got “Soothing Sounds For Baby: Electronic Music By Raymond Scott, Vol. 1, 1 To 6 Months” hoping to turn my boy into a Kraftwerk robot or at least a Devo spud. The film, “DECONSTRUCTING DAD-The Music, Machines and Mystery of Raymond Scott,” was made by Scott’s son Stan Warnow.
Father and Daughter
Friday, May 21st, 2010This animation by Michaël Dudok de Wit comes via my brother Brendan Hughes. The use of shadow and light will knock you out. But the story will take your breath. Anyone who has lost someone will relate to the ache, vigilance and irrational hope of the daughter.
Akira Kurosawa
Wednesday, April 21st, 2010Fame
Tuesday, April 13th, 2010Watching Something Wild the other night, I’d completely forgotten that the Feelies perform in it and get some serious screen-time. Watch about :35 seconds in – the crazy percussionist Dave Weckerman gives a knock out vocal performance. Totally boss!
Ain’t In It For My Health
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010
We can’t wait to see the documentary about Levon Helm called, Ain’t In It For My Health. The very talented cinematographer and our friend, Emily Topper, is the director of photography. She was at SXSW for the premiere. Emily and the director, Jacob Hatley, spent countless hours with Helm, sleeping in his barn and sitting at his kitchen table as he held forth. They were there for his ambivalent reaction to the Grammy’s Life Time Achievement Award and the news that his cancer might have returned.
