Today is the first day of school in Boston. My 2 boys went off with out much fuss. Although Dashiel put on his backpack 30 minutes before we had to leave. I hated this day growing up and I hate it still. It felt so unjust that time had been mine to do with what I wanted. When school started it meant someone else’s schedule, someone else’s agenda. Phooey on that.

Collecting
Tuesday, August 31st, 2010Paul Mawhinney has the largest record collection in the world. It is worth millions of dollars but that can’t match Mr. Mawhinney’s passion. This bittersweet film by Sean Dunne captures his reckoning with his health and the death of vinyl. It just goes to show, you never know where your heart will go. What will touch you, make you feel connected to this world, inspire your devotion. I have always envied people who could hand themselves over completely. Even if it tilts a little toward obsession.
Desmond Dekker
Monday, August 30th, 2010Oh how I love this song. The line, “Darling” she said, “I was yours to receive.” is killer. A life time of sorrow, want and loss in one sentence.
Abbey Lincoln
Monday, August 23rd, 2010When we were younger we were hungry for, well everything, but most of all music. We saw Abbey Lincoln a bunch of times at Scullers or the Regatta bar. There was one night that was straight magic. You know the kind when the air is warm, all the doors swing open, you love your friends and life so much you might pop. The show was so crowded we were put ON THE STAGE with Abbey Lincoln (in the coolest hat) and the band. I thought our friend Jamie would fall off his chair in a swoon. She was one of a kind.

Look at how young Cat Stevens is in this! He is still in the frilly-shirt phase. I have always loved this sad and sweetly sardonic song.
Augustus Pablo + Hugh Mundell
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010I was looking for Augusta Pablo playing the melodica and came across this. Listen to Hugh Mundell’s (aka Jah Levi) voice so pure and clear. You can ease right back into it.
Now we’re gonna shake the beach
Friday, June 25th, 2010Heard this driving through the city on a hot-hot and muggy night. I defy you to sit still! Impossible. No one can resist Elvis + bongos + summer.
